Follow the whole life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), the Basque knight who became the founder of the Society of Jesus, told in order across 30 soft watercolor paintings. It begins with his birth in the castle of Loyola, his years as a page at Arévalo and as a young courtier of Navarre. Then come the cannonball that wounds his leg at Pamplona in 1521, his long recovery at Loyola reading the Life of Christ and the lives of the saints, and the vision of Our Lady with the Child. He leaves home on a mule, gives his fine clothes to a beggar, keeps his vigil at Montserrat and lays down his sword, prays in the cave at Manresa, receives the great illumination beside the river Cardoner and writes the Spiritual Exercises. Later scenes show his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, his studies in Barcelona, Alcalá and Salamanca, his student years in Paris with Francis Xavier and Peter Faber, the vows at Montmartre in 1534, the vision at La Storta where God the Father places him with Christ carrying the cross, the Christmas Mass at the crib in Rome, the approval of the Society of Jesus in 1540, the sending of Xavier to the missions, his death in 1556 and a final portrait with the IHS monogram. Ignatius looks the same from painting to painting: a Basque nobleman and soldier with wavy hair in the early scenes, a bearded pilgrim in rough grey sackcloth, a student in Paris, and later a bald, bearded priest in a plain black cassock. The settings are 16th century Spain, France, Italy and the Holy Land, with period clothing, armor and architecture throughout. Every scene is painted with tenderness in pastel colors on a cream paper background, and the wounds and hardships are shown gently, without gore. These paintings are a completely new and different set from any other Saint Ignatius listing in the shop.
